AU Juried Student Exhibition opens Saturday

ANDERSON — The Jessie C. Wilson Galleries at Anderson University will host the annual Juried Student Exhibition beginning tomorrow through March 21.

The opening reception and award ceremony will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. This year’s juror, Chris Sickels, will give a lecture at 4 p.m. His work will be exhibited in conjunction with the student work selected for the exhibition.

The Juried Student Exhibition is a competition open to all Art+Design students, regardless of year or major. A juror selects the works for the show and gives awards for Best of Show as well as for specific areas of study.

The exhibition offers gallery visitors the opportunity to see the variety of work being created by AU Art+Design students at all levels. A broad spectrum of media are typically represented, including: painting, drawing, design, sculpture, print media, and photography.

Since 2010, the Wilson Galleries have hosted a Juror’s Exhibition alongside the Student Juried Exhibition. Seeing the artwork and reading the statement of the guest juror give both students and gallery visitors a helpful context for the selection of work in the student show.

This exhibition’s juror is Chris Sickels, the creative force behind Red Nose Studio. Red Nose Studio’s illustrations appear in advertising, magazines, books, newspapers, packaging, character development and animation. His work has been honored by many award institutions and has been featured in HOW, Print, Creativity, Communication Arts and 3x3 Magazine. Sickels has twice been honored with the Carol Anthony Grand Prize award from the Society of Illustrators 3-D Salon.

Two of Sickels’ short films, "The Red Thread Project and Innards," were selected to screen at the 2005 and 2006 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. Sickels has authored and illustrated "The Look Book;" he has also illustrated two children's books: "Here Comes The Garbage Barge" and "The Beginner's Guide To Running Away From Home," which was released June 2013.

Sickels has a BFA in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Illustration from The Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
