Stocking up on books

Library sees influx of residents before snowstorms

ANDERSON — While impending snow means long lines at grocery stores, it also means long lines at the local library for books and movies.

Dan Malloy, an employee at the Anderson Public Library, said they usually get swamped right before snowstorms with people checking out lots of movies and books to hold them over. He said families with children are very likely to come in and make sure they have enough entertainment in case school is canceled.

“There’s a pretty big influx of people right before we get adverse weather,” Malloy said. “They come up with big stacks of books, lots of kids’ books.”

He said movies were especially popular as people snatched up enough to keep their children happy and entertain themselves as well.

Steven Taggart is retired and doesn’t have any children to watch out for now, but he was at the library Tuesday making sure he had plenty of material to keep him busy during the snowstorm.

Instead of movies, Taggart went with season collections of television shows like “Smallville.” When he worked, he said, he signed up for so much overtime that he missed out on a lot of television over the years. Now he’s taking advantage of retired life and making up for lost time as far as TV shows are concerned.

“I’m trying to play catch-up at this point,” Taggart said as he laughed.

He said the snow gives him even more time to watch movies and shows because he tries not to get out when there is snow on the ground.

“I’m not really big on getting out in the snow,” he said.

Because the library serves such a large purpose in Anderson as a meeting place, it takes a lot for it to shut down or close early even in adverse weather.
