INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne professor will serve as the state’s poet laureate for the next two years.
The Indiana Arts Commission recently announced the selection of George Kalamaras to the position.
Kalamaras grew up in Cedar Lake in northwestern Indiana and has been an IPFW professor since 1990. He says he’s thrilled by the appointment, saying he sees poetry as an act of loving service — to people, to animals and the planet, and to the culture at large.
He has published six books of poetry and one of scholarship.
The Indiana Arts Commission conducted a statewide call for nominations that were reviewed by a selection committee comprised of representatives from Indiana’s major universities.
