East Side Church of God to bring animals from Columbus Zoo

ANDERSON — The end of East Side Church of God’s Kids Camp is going to get wild.

The church, located at 2600 E. 5th St., is closing its vacation Bible school with animals from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Trainers from the zoo will be on hand to show off eight to 15 different animals and discuss different creatures at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, Children’s Ministries Pastor Gayle Wiese said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Wiese said she’s not sure which animals the zoo is bringing, but she expects reptiles, birds and mammals to be shown.

Many of the animals have been featured with expert and Columbus Zoo director emeritus Jack Hanna on television like “Good Morning America” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

“We tried to get Jack Hanna here, but he’s retiring,” Wiese said. “He’s trained the animals and the trainers that are coming through the program.”

The Columbus Zoo offers “The Zoo to You,” a series of outreach programs. Community groups, corporations, schools and other organizations can pay to have handlers bring animals to events and birthdays, according to the zoo’s website.

Zoo staff will talk about where the animals come from, their dietary needs and other facts about their habitats.

Wiese said she doesn’t know if attendees will be allowed to interact with the animals, but they will at least be able to see them up close.

Although the public is invited to attend, the program is closing East Side Church of God’s Kids Camp, Wiese said. The vacation Bible school, which began Monday, is all about weird animals this year.

“The whole idea of the weird animals piece is that everyone is different. Everyone is unique,” Wiese said. “Jesus loves people for that.”
