City to celebrate Earth Day

Activities at Shadyside Park on Saturday

ANDERSON – After a one-year hiatus, the celebration of Earth Day in Anderson will take place at Shadyside Memorial Park this Saturday.

Eexhibits from vendors, food and entertainment, a tree planting and kids activity area are planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Earth Day Arborfest will take place in the circular drive in front of the former Anderson Parks & Recreation Department offices on Oak Street.

The first Earth Day took place in 1970 and since that time has been recognized in communities around the world.

Allan Henderson, president of the Anderson Tree Commission, said Anderson celebrated Earth Day for a number of years, but in 2013 there wasn’t an Earth Day event.

“Part of the charge for the Tree Commission was to have an Earth Day event,” he said.

Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith will issue an Arbor Day proclamation.

Henderson said exhibitors will include nonprofit organizations and social groups, including the Heart of the River.

Heart of the River is opposed to the proposed Mounds Lake Reservoir project and will also have a presence in Indianapolis. The group intends to have a 120-foot aerial banner towed between Indianapolis and Anderson.

Henderson said the Earth Day event is not in support of or in opposition to the reservoir project.

He said the Heart of the River will be passing out literature concerning the reservoir project but will also have educational material about White River and the aquatic life.

There will be a silent auction with items provided by the exhibitors including trees, flower baskets, gardening tools, gift certificates and paintings.

The kids area will offer face painting and coloring activities, Henderson said.

The event is being funded through donations and sponsorships.

Entertainment starts at 11:30 a.m. Scheduled to perform are: JT Fuentes at 11:30 a.m.; Tanya Navarro Gonzalez, 12:15 p.m.; Zumba with Lindsey Lewis, 12:45 p.m.; and bluegrass music with Dennis Niccum at 1:15 p.m.
