New events fill Little 500 Festival schedule

ANDERSON — More than a month’s worth of events have kicked off for Anderson’s 27th annual Little 500 Festival.

New festival events

Applewood Pay Less Bowling Tournament got the festival rolling on April 19. The event raised $4,500, said Amy Greenway, Anderson Speedway event coordinator.

Greenway said the Main Street Pay Less Dog Walk, “Bob and Tom” Tim Wilson Benefit Show and the 10th annual Little 500 Black and White Dinner and Auction are among the events she’s most looking forward to this year.

“We have the Black and White gala that the Rotary Club is hosting,” she said. “In years past, they’ve raised upwards of $18,000,” she said.

This year’s festival features several new events, such as the Alternatives Family Day/Cornhole Tournament, Student United Way at Anderson University Rummage Sale, Celebrity Waiter Lunch at Garfield’s for John’s Hope, the United Methodist Church Zumbathon and the Anderson U.S. Army Athletic 5k, Greenway said.

The Little 500 is in its 66th year, and the festival is in its 27th. Greenway said the number of new events may be due to timing.

“There are more people in need than there ever has been before,” she said. “The Little 500 Festival, because of its history, people know their events can be successful.”

Gayle Jones Burris, executive director of the Paramount Theatre Centre, said the festival is an opportunity for the community to come together to raise money.

The Paramount held its first festival event of the year on Thursday and has several more coming up, including the “Bob and Tom” Tim Wilson Benefit Show.

“People like to help people, so it’s great to have the festival as that outlet,” Burris said.

Greenway said events during the festival have raised nearly $2 million over the years.

“Almost all of that money raised, it doesn’t go to other places,” she said. “It’s helping the people of Madison County. I think that’s why there are so many people participating.”
