Little 500 Festival nearing $2 million mark for charities

66th Classic set for May 24

ANDERSON – Now in its 25th year, the annual monthlong celebration surrounding the Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson Speedway will be raising money to assist with hunger relief in Madison County.

The 66th running of the Pay Less Little 500 is set for May 24 at Anderson Speedway.

Amy Greenway, co-chairwoman of the Little 500 Festival, said Tuesday that since 1988 the festival has raised almost $2 million for local Madison County charities.

“The money stays right here in Madison County,” she said during the festival kickoff at the Pay Less Cross Street store . “There are 12 new events this year benefiting local charities and there is an event every day.

“It’s important for us to surpass the $2 million mark this year,” Greenway said.

Second Harvest Food Bank provides meals to 20,000 people in Madison County every month, said Tim Kean, CEO of Second Harvest of East Central Indiana.

“This is something you don’t anticipate,” he said of the food bank being named the recipient of the funds raised by the four Anderson Pay Less stores this year.

“We’re raising money to feed people,” Kean said. “All the money raised will go back into the local community.”

Every dollar raised provides four meals, Steve Jenkins, area manager for Pay Less, said.

“We’re thrilled the Anderson stores have named Second Harvest as the charities this year,” he said. “We hope to raise $30,000 this year, which will double what was raised last year.”

Pay Less made a $7,500 donation to Second Harvest that equates to 30,000 meals.

Jenkins said Pay Less customers can make monetary donations or purchase pre-packaged food as a donation at the Anderson stores.

Kevin Kotansky, of Pay Less/Kroger public affairs, said the company provided $14 million in donations in 2013 to communities where stores are located with $9.9 million dedicated to providing hunger relief.
