Madison County Solidarity Labor Council holding annual picnic

ALEXANDRIA — To say thanks to workers, the Madison County Solidarity Labor Council is hosting the annual Labor Day Picnic and Car Show at Beulah Park today.

Free food, entertainment, a craft show and cruise-in will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alexandria park.

In addition to the car show being changed to a cruise-in for attendees and displayers to mingle, the council is opening a pavilion for vendors to bring in homemade items and crafts. Booth spaces are $10 on a first come, first serve basis and vendors must provide their own tables.

“We look forward to these being the first of many events we will be working to add to the Labor Day festivities over the next couple of years,” Solidarity President Patrick Hill said in a press release.

The press release went on to say that the working men and women of Madison County have united over the years to improve the lives of all working people — union and non-union.

Union members have waged many battles, such as helping put a stop to child labor and advocating for better funding in education and health care, Hill said in the press release.

The picnic is meant to serve as another thanks to those efforts.

The very first Labor Day was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, where thousands of workers marched in a parade from City Hall to Union Square.

In 1884, Congress passed an act naming the first Monday in September as Labor Day.
