The 'last hoorah of summer'

Ovid Community Church hosts Labor Day weekend picnic

ANDERSON — The "last hoorah of summer," as churchgoer Robyn Quinn put it, Ovid Community Church opened up its backyard Sunday to local families for food and fun.

With Labor Day weekend a popular time for many to travel and enjoy an extra day off, Pastor Keith Wooden said the annual Labor Day weekend picnic is a "cap-off of summer and a fall launch, as well" for those relaxing in Madison County.

About 250 showed up, with a mix of churchgoers and family or friends out in the community.

Wooden said the event grows a little each year because people really look forward to it.

This year, Ovid Community Church, 793 E. 600S, added a few more activities like a bounce house and pingpong tourney. It's been "more of a picnic in the past," Wooden said.

The Cumberland Gap Connection Bluegrass Band was back for the fourth annual Labor Day picnic and Wooden added that a few people brought their own instruments to join in, though he'd like to have seen more.

He said bluegrass music appeals to people of all ages and fits in with the interactive event that provides a time for participants to "just connect."

"It's a day to spend with the church family and your family and have a good time," Crissy Quinn said.

The Quinns made the day a family affair with brothers Larry, Crissy's husband, and Terry Quinn bringing their families out.

Terry Quinn said "church ain't always about dressing up sitting in a pew" but that fellowship can involve fun events outside of the church building.

While the heat kept some inside, activities like the cornhole tournament were still popular amongst the crowd that also enjoyed a hog roast lunch.

The church plans to host another Labor Day event next year, but in the meantime, is planning for a mission trip to the Philippines this winter.

Church member Shawn Carter said they'll be leaving Jan. 9 for two weeks to help Filipinos collect honey from beehives and set up water catch systems so that they'll have more drinking water.

To help fund the trip, he said, Ovid will have an auction Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. in the gym.
