'Figures of Speech' translated in art

Anderson exhibit open until July 31

ANDERSON, Ind. — Open now at the center, 32 W. 10th St., “Figures of Speech,” features pieces of art that take common literary phrases and bring visual interpretation to them, said Deborah Stapleton, director of the arts center.

In its second year in Anderson, the competitive exhibition features artists from all over the Midwest. Stapleton said they saw about 45 entries this year, up from 30 last, and displayed 22 of the pieces.

“We think it’s a show that will catch on,” she said. “It captures the imagination of the artist.” Two artists could hone in on the same figure of speech but translate it differently, she added.

Scott Anderson, of Muncie, won best of show with “God is Watching.” The exhibit sees anywhere from 10 to 200 people a day depending on the center’s events, Stapleton said.

Anyone interested in the exhibit she calls “fun for the artists and fun for the audience” can do so until July 31. Gallery hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
