Local fare that's fairly good for you

ANDERSON, Ind. — Keeping a balanced diet is tough. But there’s more to it than just getting your fruits, veggies, protein, grains and dairy.

What about balancing good-tasting and good-for-you? Some locally-owned restaurants are making that a little easier.

Well, they’re helping you eat lighter, anyway.

Each of their dishes below weigh in at under 10 grams of fat and at or under 300 calories, according to recipe information provided by the restaurants and nutrition data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it, too? Or your pizza, burger or yummy chocolate coffee drink, for that matter?

Veggie pizza

2 slices of a 12-inch pie

Columbus Avenue Pizza, 5436 Columbus Ave., Anderson

Calories: 182.5

Fat: 7.6 g

You read right: pizza. What once was the epitome of dorm-room indulgence has gone health food. Sort of.

This one from Columbus Avenue Pizza comes loaded down with an ooey, gooey cheese blend, veggies and red sauce. But don’t loosen your belt just yet.

Two slices - that’s a fourth of the pie - clock in at under 200 calories.

And for those with allergies, Columbus Avenue Pizza offers gluten-free crust.

Third-pound turkey burger

Hamburger High, 21 W. 38th St., Anderson

Calories: 300

Fat: 7 g

Building a better burger? Try better-for-you.

This one from Hamburger High is a third-pound of protein-packed Tom Turkey ($4). Of course, you can load it down with one of four different cheeses and an array of sauces, which might tick the calories and fat up a bit. But if you stick with veggies, you’ll keep that figure intact.

Hamburger High has other lighter fare like salads and a Boca burger on its Teacher’s Pet menu.

Vegetable Chow Mei Fang

Bamboo House Buffet, 211 E. Main St., Chesterfield

Calories: 284

Fat: 6 g

The vegetable chow mei fang ($5.25 for a bowl) at Bamboo House Buffet is spoonful after spoonful of rice noodles, carrots, celery, broccoli and other veggie goodness. And for only 284 calories and 6 grams of fat.

Keep in mind, that’s only half a bowl; but a bowl is more than enough to feed two.

Bamboo House has other lighter dishes on its diet menu, like steamed chicken, shrimp and veggie plates.

Veggie Omelet

1 omelet (no side dish)

Eva’s Pancake House

Calories: 146

Fat: 3.72

Less than 150 calories for a monster-of-a-veggie-omelet made with five egg whites, and packed with protein and nutrients?

That’s no yolk.

Opting for egg whites cuts down on fat, calories and cholesterol. Although, if you choose to load it with cheese, that’s your own business.

Coffee and chocolate - it’s pretty much a match made in heaven.

This one from Gathering Grounds ($3.50) is even more heavenly, with only 100 calories and zero fat. But with chocolate, caramel, Irish cream and two shots of espresso, it might taste a little more like sin.

Gathering Grounds offers skim milk and sugar-free syrups for many of its drinks.
