Food Truckin' Thursday returns

This year's season longer, student musicians to perform in Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. — A new favorite that combines food and cars is rolling back into town next week.

Food Truckin’ Thursday starts back up May 1. For about six months, local vendors will pull up their food trucks to Citizens Park Plaza at Ninth and Main streets from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event, which was inaugurated last fall and ran for three months, is starting earlier so patrons can enjoy the event during the spring and summer months, Economic development specialist Levi Rinker said.

The summer months will also allow additional entertainment.

Rick Singleton, Slick Music Center owner, said some of his students will perform throughout the summer months. He and some of the other teachers performed last year, but summer break will introduce younger talent to the event.

Guests can expect mostly acoustic music, but various genres. Rock, folk and country music are among the type of music Singleton, his fellow teachers and his students will play.

Singleton said the event is one way for Slick Music Center to give back to community with what it does best: music.

“We just try to provide opportunities to have the students perform,” Singleton said. “…The way (Food Truckin’ Thursdays) is set up, it’s very conducive to a mingling atmosphere. People crowd around and just enjoy their music.”

Rinker said that atmosphere and having something different to offer to the community helps build the city.

The food trucks offer exposure for restaurants,’ and it also gets people downtown, Rinker said. The foot traffic gives residents and businesses a chance to network, build relationships and grow.

“It develops a relationship and positive association,” he said. “…It’s organic, in a sense; that’s where you see quality of life grow.”

The full food truck list for the event is being finalized, but some past favorites are expected to return, Rinker said. Your Way Café, AhhBurritos and Greek’s Pizzeria will be back.

Food Truckin’ Thursdays will run 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Thursday from May 1 to late October at Citizens Park Plaza.
