Markleville Centennial Cookbook delivers favorite recipes

MARKLEVILLE — Things are cookin' in Markleville. With the recent publication of the community's cookbook, "Favorite Recipes," the secrets of some longtime family favorite dishes and desserts are out. The cookbook is a compilation of recipes contributed by Markleville residents, many of them family recipes handed down for generations. The project was launched as part of Markleville's centennial celebration in 2012.

“Some of these recipes are a hundred years old,” noted Jan Fox, Markleville resident and cookbook contributor. Fox said the book includes recipes from her mother and grandmothers as well. The cookbook is packed with recipes in every category.

"Favorite Recipes" also relates a little of the town’s history, which goes back quite a bit beyond the time of incorporation in 1912. The story tells of John Markle, one of the first settlers to Adams Township in 1823. He laid out the village in 1854, and built his cabin at the main intersection.

The cookbook also has its complement of humor, noting that one of the great things about living in Markleville is that "a night on the town takes 12 minutes."

Fox said that members of the Markleville Park Board's Jamboree Committee collected and prepared the compilation of recipes, with John and Alison Holmes spearheading the effort. Nine Stars, the community’s telephone, power and Internet provider, contributed $1,000 to get the cookbook project off the ground.

Purchase price of "Favorite Recipes" is $12. Park Board official Wayne Fox said that proceeds from the cookbook will go toward the Markleville Jamboree, set for Aug. 1-4.The cookbook is available for sale at the Markleville Farmers Market, at the Jamboree, or by calling 533-9012, although copies are already going fast.

Cheesecake Jewels This prized recipe is among the favorite recipes featured in the Markleville Centennial Cookbook. The recipe was contributed by Mary V. Grandison. Cookbook organizer Jan Fox reported that Grandison, 91, came to Markleville when she was just 3 months old. Her family had a restaurant, filling station and grocery store in the town. 2 eggs, beaten ¾ cup sugar 2 8-oz. pkgs. Philadelphia Cream Cheese (at room temperature) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon lemon juice Cherry, strawberry or blueberry pie filling Vanilla wafers Place paper liners in 24 muffin tins. Drop one vanilla wafer into the bottom of each. Mix eggs, sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract and lemon juice until creamy. Fill cups 2/3 full and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool slightly. Drop one tablespoon of pie filling in the center of each cup.
