Buck competes in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Pendleton Heights sophomore Alex Buck placed 38th in the nation Saturday in the running of the Foot Locker Girls Cross Country Championships.

The race was run over a 5-kilometer course at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

“It was a nice day and sunny,” said Buck after competing. “It was a little hotter than I would have liked. The course was a challenge. It was harder than any course I’ve run. It was bumpy. There was a hill we had to run twice. The course was basically a loop you ran twice.”

Buck’s time was 19:22, which was just over two minutes back of the winner’s time. Tessa Barrett of Wavenrly, Penn., finished first in a time of 17:16.

“For the first mile, I went out too hard,” said Buck. “But the whole pack went hard so I didn’t want to be left behind. Then I was concentrating on finishing.”

Buck was third among the Indiana runners. Finishing ahead of her from the state were senior Kelcy Welch from Carmel, who was 17th and junior Rachel Nichwitz of Hamilton Southeastern in 26th.

“This gives me an extra boost of confidence that I can compete with these girls,” said Buck. “I am extremely blessed to be here. This was a goal for high school; that I didn’t expect to reach as a sophomore.”

Buck will now take the holiday break off before starting her preparations for the spring track season.
