---- — MUNCIE — The Anderson Indians used a 25-6 advantage in the third quarter to score a 72-50 road win over host Muncie Southside Saturday night.

Anderson, making their final trip to Southside, trailed 35-31 early in the third when they went on a 25-3 run to close out the quarter.

The two teams had not met each other since March of 2007 when the Indians won a 61-54 sectional contest over the Rebels. Muncie Southside will close at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

The Rebels, led by former Highland coach Jeff Howard, made it a game in the first half but could not keep up with the Indians in the third.

The Indians built an early lead thanks to a quick start by guard Kenya Wilkerson and their pressure defense. Wilkerson scored the first five Indian points while Southside turned the ball over four times as Anderson led 5-0 early.

The Indians held the lead throughout the first half until Darcel Hunt scored with 12 seconds left to give Muncie a 32-31 lead. The Rebels scored the first three points of the second half to lead 35-31 when Wilkerson took over again.

Wilkerson stole the ball at midcourt and hit a lay up to give Anderson the lead again, 38-37. Wilkerson hit two more shots and Grant Bennett swished a 3-pointer to make it 45-37 with 3:30 left in the third and the Indians were not challenged again.

Anderson took a 56-38 lead into the fourth quarter and continued to edge the lead up, gaining a 24-point bulge twice on their way to win number three on the season against four losses.

The game was rugged with 19 fouls called on Southside and 19 on Anderson, including a technical foul on each side. The teams combined to shoot 50 free throws, Anderson hit 17 of 22 while Southside struggled, hitting 16 of 28 free tosses.

The Indians were led in scoring by Wilkerson, who had a game-high 23 points. Bennett finished in double figures with 10, while Greg Dixon added nine. Southside, who dropped its sixth straight game, was led by Isom’s 15 points. The Rebels are now 1-8 on the season.

Anderson will be in action next on Friday against Yorktown. Anderson’s JV squad defeated Muncie Southside 50-40.
