Alexandria sweeps MG in basketball

FAIRMOUNT — Madison-Grant hosted a girls/boys doubleheader versus Alexandria last night in high school basketball, but its home court was unkind as the Tigers swept the twinbill with a 66-57 girls win and 50-45 boys victory.

The girls started things off by leading most of the first half of action, but the Argylls were determined to make things interesting and took a 49-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter of play.

Alexandria raced to an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter to recapture the lead at 51-49. Madison-Grant retook 52-51 lead with 4:43 to play, but the Tigers regained it 53-52 with 4:31 and never lost it again.

Morgan Oliver paced the visitors with 23 points and nine boards. Kelsey Crisp and Courtney Skinner followed in the double figure scoring column with 14 and 13, respectively.

Cierra Liddick was perfect from the field going 8-of-8 to finish with 19 points and eight caroms for the Argylls’ only double figure scorer.

The boys took the court and there was just as much dramatics without the scoring onslaught. Alexandria took an early 5-0 lead and held on for a 9-8 first quarter lead.

The trailed just once in the first half and went into the locker room at the half with a 20-17 lead, but the Argylls went to work by outscoring the visiting team 17-13 and held a narrow 34-33 lead going into the final stanza.

The Tigers spoiled the party by scoring 17 of the 28 points in the fourth to hold on to a 50-45 win for first-year coach Kyle Bloom.

Braden Warren paced his team with 21 points and six rebounds and it got another six boards from Blaize Kelly.

Trevor McNutt led Madison-Grant with 15 points and Aaron Dreaden got seven board in the losing effort against their Central Indiana Conference foe.

The girls will face each other again in the first-round of the sectional tournament next week.
