Turnovers doom Anderson in loss to Wildcats

---- — ANDERSON — It looked a lot like what the Anderson Lady Tribe have done to their foes the past several seasons.

To be honest, the mirror image doesn't look good.

Anderson led 16-15 after one quarter but succumbed to the pressure defense of No. 3-ranked Lawrence North in an 84-45 loss here Wednesday.

The Indians had at least seven turnovers in every quarter on their way to 36 mishaps, more than twice the number of field goals the team hit in the game.

Anderson's big problem was trying to break the pressure on the dribble instead of the pass. The Indians would get through the first wave of pressure but then continue dribbling until the second wave forced a turnover.

Lawrence North had no such trouble with its offense. The Wildcats had only 14 turnovers despite it being their first game of the season. They also hit half of their 62 shots from the field, including 9-of-22 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats had four players score in double figures, topped by Ana Owens with 18 points. Lamina Cooper added 16, Amani Ferguson 14 and Jordan Hankins 10. The visitors got 28 points of their bench compared to six for Anderson.

Anderson hit just 16-of-42 from the field. Da'Sha Boyd was the only AHS player to score in double digits with 12. Samia Carter, who had the best success actually breaking the press and converting it directly to points, scored nine. Chelsea Bentley and Ania Daniels added seven each.

The rebounding totals were a dead heat at 37-37, but 17 of Lawrence North's total came on the offensive glass. Cooper had eight rebounds for the Wildcats to top both teams and Boyd grabbed six to pace the Tribe.

Lawrence North broke the game open by scoring the first 11 points of the second quarter and the Wildcats were never seriously threatened after that. In that quarter the Indians had 13 turnovers.

Anderson (1-1) will next play on Tuesday at home against Muncie South. The Rebels have no junior varsity team so there will just be a varsity contest, starting at 7 p.m.
