ANDERSON, Ind. — Much of the local high school volleyball postseason attention will be focused on the Class 2A sectional at Alexandria, where a pair of area team ranked in the state’s top 10 will compete.
Fifth-ranked Alexandria opens play Thursday night against Sheridan. The host Tigers’ match will begin about 30 minutes following the completion of a 6 p.m. contest between Tipton and Eastern.
Play begins in the tournament tonight at 7 with Taylor squaring off against Elwood. The winner of that match faces sixth-ranked Madison-Grant — the Madison County champion — in Saturday’s first semifinal at 11 a.m.
The championship match at Alexandria is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
Area teams also will compete at three other sectional sites this week.
Pendleton Heights begins play in the Class 4A sectional at New Castle tonight. The Arabians host Connersville following a 6 p.m. matchup between the host Trojans — ranked No. 3 in the state — and Mount Vernon.
Anderson opens up Thursday at 6 p.m. against fifth-ranked Yorktown. The Tigers have moved up from Class 3A because of the IHSAA’s new “tradition” factor that is based on the previous two seasons’ postseason results.
Richmond and Greenfield-Central close out the first round Thursday night. The semifinals at New Castle begin Saturday at 11 a.m. with the championship match at 6 p.m.
Frankton begins play in the Class 2A field at Winchester on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against the host Golden Falcons. Muncie Burris, ranked No. 14 in the state, meets Shenandoah in Saturday’s first semifinal at 11 a.m. with Lapel meeting the Frankton-Winchester winner in the second semi.
The championship match at Winchester is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
In Class A, at Cowan, 11th-ranked Daleville opens against the 14th-ranked Blackhawks at 6 p.m. Thursday. That match will be followed by Monroe Central against No. 1-ranked Wes-Del. Thursday’s winners will meet in the first semifinal Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by Liberty Christian vs. Southern Wells.
The final at Cowan is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
