Arabians fourth best at state golf tourney

FRANKLIN — Trevar Denney was back in his usually top spot on Wednesday in the final round of the 78th Indiana Boys High School Golf State Finals and he showed that he belonged among the top players on Wednesday at The Legends Golf Course.

The senior finished his career with a two-round total of 73-72 145 and finished fifth individually. Pendleton Heights also finished fourth in the team standings, improving on its 10th place finish last year. The Arabians were only two shots out of second place for the tournament.

"We played like I thought we would," said Pendleton Heights coach Jim Phillips. "We didn't play as well as we can and I hoped to shoot 294-95 to have a chance to win. I'm not disappointed with the boys or the finish, but I wanted to win. We didn't come here to finish second, fourth or fifth and it was our year."

Denney, who was slotted in the No. 5 position in Tuesday's first round after shooting an 85 at the regional, was back playing No. 1 again on Wednesday after firing a first-round 73 to crack the top 10. He was even better in the final round, making three birdies in the final eight holes to finish with a two-under 34 on the back nine.

"I was happy I got to redeem myself," said Denney. "I thought I hit my irons really good and my tee balls were solid. The putter struggled and that didn't allow me to get under par. I was just trying to help my team and finishing low was great for me. It's an improvement from last year and our goal was to improve and play better. Zach (Farrer) played well."

Farrer finished with rounds of 76-75 151 to card the second best total for the Arabians and was in 19th place individually. The junior had just one birdie, but added 14 pars for a consistent final 18 holes.
