Lapel reverses County tennis verdict over Frankton

FRANKTON — The change came at No. 2 singles and it helped reverse a Madison County tennis tournament outcome here Thursday.

Just a week ago, Frankton defeated Lapel 3-2 by sweeping the singles matches.

On Thursday, sophomore Peighton Dobbins was moved from No. 2 doubles to No. 2 singles and she pulled off a victory to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 triumph.

“Peighton had been wanting a chance to play singles,” said Lapel coach Justin Coomer. “So we moved her to singles. She defeated our No. 3 in a challenge match so she played No. 2. I am surprised at how well she played.” Dobbins won the first set 6-4 but had a tight second set against Frankton’s Lucy Browning.

Dobbins didn’t know her match would determine the overall outcome until late in that second set.

“I was up 6-5 when I found out,” said Dobbins. “I knew I had to win that next game, but of course I didn’t, so we had to go to a tie-breaker. She (Browning) went up 3-2 and I just had to come back.” Of course, she did, winning five straight points for a 7-3 victory.”

Dobbins enjoyed the change to singles.

“I am not that comfortable at the net,” admitted Dobbins. “But in singles I can pretty much stay back. The lobs (with the wind at her back) weren’t working and she came to the net a lot. So I had to pass her.”

At No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Kaitlin Dobbins and Rachel Thalls defeated Frankton’s Emma Wagoner and Gabby Ochoa 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles the Lapel team of Gabby Cherry and Bailee Scribner turned back Abby Morgan and Hannah Hodson 6-4, 6-2.

Frankton’s two points came at No. 3 singles, where Sydney Wagoner rolled past Emma Bush 6-0, 6-1 and at No. 1 singles, where Frankton’s always tough Alexys Rastetter rallied from a 6-3 loss in the first set against Lapel’s Lexi Allen.
