Sectional tennis final suspended

ANDERSON, Ind. — It’s going to take a little longer than expected to determine the 2013 Anderson girls tennis sectional champion.

Defending champ Alexandria and Pendleton Heights barely had gotten underway Friday afternoon when heavy rain caused the suspension of the final match.

Play will resume at 10 a.m. today at the Highland Middle School courts.

The Tigers are leading in four of the five contests, but it’s still early. Pendleton Heights’ Emma McCardwell won the only completed set, taking a 6-0 decision against Abbie Matthew at No. 2 singles.

But the Arabians trail everywhere else.

Alexandria’s Sarah-Kate Brenner leads Carly Wilson 3-1 at No. 1 singles, and the Tigers’ Hannah Libler holds a tight 3-2 advantage against Lauren Robertson at No. 3 singles.

Alexandria’s Allie Hueston and Abbie Miller are off to a 4-2 advantage against Kayleigh and Audrey Corn at No. 1 doubles, and the Tigers’ Shanna Kelly and Danielle Maynard also are up 4-2 against Haley Augsburger and Lina Larsson.

The Arabians won a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Alexandria last month during the semifinals of the Madison County tournament.
