Royals take Raiders to woodshed

MIDDLETOWN, Ind. — Usually when a team rushes the ball 66 times for 292 yards, has 24 first downs and never punts it wins the football game.

However, that wasn’t the case as Class 2A, No. 7 Shenandoah lost to Class A, No. 6 Eastern Hancock 68-19 on Friday night at Dale Green Field in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

The Royals put up 345 yards rushing and 410 yards of total offense and only punted the ball one time in the game. Eastern Hancock also won the turnover battle 4-0.

“We got taken to the woodshed,” said Shenandoah coach Scott Widner. “That is a good team, and they beat us at every facet of the game. This stings a little, but we are going to learn from this and get better.”

Eastern Hancock scored on its first six possessions of the game and led 47-12 at the half. Senior Spencer Gilbert led the ground game for the Royals with 176 yards rushing as they averaged 10 yards per play in the first half.

“Sometimes we weren’t in the right spots, and at other times we didn’t tackle,” said Widner. “We didn’t come close to stopping them all night. I felt we moved the ball at times, but we didn’t have a stop all night.”

Chandler Hale led the Raiders with 105 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run, and added two receptions for 21 yards.

Lane Young added 61 yards on 13 carries, and J.J. Myers had 29 yards rushing on eight carries. Moose Kirk caught two catches for 23 yards – both of them touchdown receptions. The first was a 22-yard score on fourth-and-19, and the second was on fourth-and-1 from the 1-yard line.

Shenandoah (7-1) hosts Indianapolis Ritter next Friday for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
