No plain-Jane style for this couple

ANDERSON, Ind. — When Scott and Chrislyn Reed bought their home 12 years ago, almost every wall was covered with wallpaper. Now every wall is painted – but not in a plain-Jane color or everyday style. Each room is accented with at least one unique wall that leaves guests asking: “How did you do that?”

“My friend, Gina Stuckey, has helped me a lot,” said Chrislyn, director of publishing at PraiseGathering Music Group. “She’s an interior decorator.”

“Chrislyn’s being humble,” said Scott, financial adviser at Edward Jones. “She’s got a good eye.”

Tackling one room at a time, Chrislyn and Gina have transformed the house into a delightful treat for the senses. Faux finishes, unique designs, stenciling and distinctive colors abound at every turn. It’s only natural to reach out and touch the walls.

Greeting visitors in the entryway is a faded checkerboard design.

“Gina did this as a birthday present for me,” said Chrislyn. “I didn’t even know what it was going to look like when it was done.”

Most of the living room is painted taupe, which only adds to the dramatic effect of the accent wall behind the baby grand piano.

“Gina cut up paper bags, fixed them to the wall and painted over them. Then a metallic coat covered it all,” she said. When asked if the idea made her nervous, she was quick to admit hesitation. “I said I wanted to see what it would look like first. She took me to a house in Alexandria where she had done this and I loved it.”

Chrislyn added her own whimsy to the kitchen with a colorful checked design that clearly took many long hours to complete. White lines separate small diamonds of bright red, mustard yellow and gray.

Not wishing to neglect the bathrooms, the duo fashioned a stand-out bit of inspiration for the master. A thick strip of texture (created with drywall mud) is painted shiny silver and lies on a bed of smooth gray.
