Cartoon characters would be preferable

Dick Campbell’s April 2 Viewpoint expresses unhappiness with the presidential candidates. He criticizes all three, but especially Sens. Clinton and Obama, whom he describes as “socialists.” This term is used frequently by people who apparently don’t know its meaning. Socialism is a system in which the government owns the means of production. Who is advocating that?
He declares that socialism would be a disaster for our country. But we have recently seen that it was unrestricted, unregulated capitalism, a conservative tenet, that nearly ruined us. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the $30 billion bailout of Bear Stearns was necessary to prevent a “financial meltdown.”
Campbell facetiously suggests that even an Elmer Fudd-Bugs Bunny team would be preferable to the candidates. If we let our imaginations follow this idea, do you think a Fudd-Bunny administration would lead us into an unnecessary war by lying about WMDs? Would Yosemite Sam as Defense Secretary conduct the war so in Advisor Tweety Bird ignore repeated warnings about al-Qaida? Would they appoint their crony Sylvester to head FEMA and botch the response to a major hurricane? Would Attorney General Daffy Duck so politicize the Justice Department that he’d have to resign in disgrace? Would these officials meet in the White House and discuss how to torture?
Would they increase the national debt by 65 percent in seven years? Not even these characters would be such a disaster!
