My thoughts about the actions of the 2013 Madison County Council. One of the first reversals: Change the start time of meetings. The 2011-12 council, with a few exceptions, started at 6 or 6:30 p.m. allowing transparency and promoting citizen participation. The 2013 council starts meeting at 5 p.m.
I think this makes it difficult for a citizen other then Government Center employees to attend. At the April 9 meeting the first comments were from the lawyer to inform those in attendance, “Council will not permit start time discussion.”
The Anderson and Elwood city councils start at 7 p.m. and citizens other than city employees attend. Why doesn’t the Madison County Council do everything possible to promote citizen participation? Is it an attempt to ensure re-election? Do you know how they voted? Do you know your County Council member? Do you care enough to ask? You live here, do you watch the elected? If your only knowledge of county government action comes from THB reporting it makes it difficult to even read between the lines.
These are my thoughts, try to attend the next meeting, see what I mean. Council set the meeting rules, most are without considering the citizen.
