Letter: Leave paranoia out of gun discussion

Two recent Viewpoints opposing gun control laws are filled with emotion, not facts.

Landon Guffey (March 14) wrote that the Constitution guarantees “we have a right to bear arms, no matter which type.” This is not true. The Constitution does provide for a Congress to pass laws and a Supreme Court with judicial powers over all cases “arising under this Constitution and the laws of the United States.”

Congress has enacted constitutional restrictions on gun ownership. A 1986 law forbid the production and sale of machine guns for civilian use. In 1984, a 10-year ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines was passed. During this period, crimes using assault weapons decreased by one-third.

Probably the most conservative Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia, wrote in a 2008 decision, “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever.”

James W. Clark (March 19) wrote, “The majority of law-abiding citizens ... fear the government more than the criminal.” Of course he offers no evidence for this ridiculous statement. He adds, “there are self-serving politicians and their liberal allies who wish to disarm the population and trash the Second Amendment.” Can you name one, Mr. Clark?

Both men present dire pictures of the government taking all of our guns away, leaving us enslaved; because it happened in other countries, it will happen here. Can we please leave paranoia out of this discussion?

  • Letter: Constitution, laws being trampled Nancy Pelosi said, "When it comes to protecting the children I'm a lioness!" Too bad that doesn't include the babies who are ripped from the womb. How ironic to hear the progressive liberals talk of compassion for illegals while killing our own.
