Letter: Republican primary offers voting choice

How many times have you said, or heard someone else say, "I don't like either party's candidate?" The primary election is for that very reason.

One reason for low interest in the primary is lack of challengers for open seats, another is having to accept party's choice and/or those who vote, not knowing the candidate's stance on the issues. This year in Madison County the Republican primary offers clear difference in all but two of elected offices. Incumbents elected in 2010 are being challenged by some because they fulfilled campaign promise. Other incumbents, choosing to be part of status quo, are being challenged by the conservative citizen.

Two of remaining council's 2012 Republican majority, Dave McCartney and Rick Gardner, having rescinded the wheel tax and gave us a balanced budget which included money for road repair and the county treasurer, Kelly Gaskill, having successfully gotten bad software decertified and replacing with software that works, she got tax bills to the citizen before the tax was due, and putting in place a way to pay property tax monthly, are three incumbents being challenged by party leadership. In my opinion, all three deserve praise not challenge.

This year let's start regaining our county and country in May with the primary, then finish the job in the general election. Vote.
