The American Right has suddenly made a Left turn on government surveillance after several years supporting George W. Bush's program to eavesdrop on telephone calls and read emails of American citizens without warrants.
But now these authoritarians have suddenly rediscovered their fear of the federal government. It's a bit late, but now they've occupied the position of the American Left as their very own. There is a lesson here: When you're the chief cheerleader for a surveillance state, you have no grounds to complain when it turns its eyes on you.
