Letter: County did not need tax on transportation

Wheel tax! The straw that broke the back for many. Note the number who have been forced to file for bankruptcy and the number in foreclosure on homes. Just what they need — a tax on their transportation. Couldn't you have waited another couple of years until things pick up?

If I read right, Indiana has allotted $3.1 million for road repair to Madison County. I realize this is just a drop in the bucket. Be thrifty. No new salary/wage increases and a lot of research on costs, to make the money go as far as possible.

Everyone has lost income in the marketplace. Many in Madison County are retirees, and they received no increases in income. Many are unemployed or underemployed. Everything you need has gone up in price while what you get for your money has shrunk.

Think of the many in Madison County who are unemployed. Now, you want to tax their transportation! Some must maintain two old cars in order to get to their two or three low-wage jobs. Even $25/$50 can seem like a fortune when you don't have it. Come on! Another tax!
