Letter: Look at multiple statistics to get full picture

Jim weighs 218 pounds, his teenage son weighs 119 pounds. To lose weight Jim goes on a diet and exercise plan and loses 20 pounds. However, he still weighs more than his son who spent his time updating Facebook. Clearly diet and exercise don't work. A year later Jim has put the weight back on and is taking multiple medications; unfortunately, he still believes in diet and exercise so he practices the same regimen but this time puts on 5 pounds. Diet and exercise are a scam. Chicago has the highest murder rate and the strictest gun laws in the nation. Gun laws don't restrict violence.

In case this is one of the papers Sarah Palin reads, I should connect the dots. Obviously these aren't scientific studies, but if they were, you wouldn't compare Jim's weight to his son's or fail to account for the potential effect of the new medications. The information about Chicago tells us that lots of people die in Chicago; that's it, nothing about the efficacy of gun laws. To do that you have to look at the rate of change in gun violence in Chicago not compare it to other cities and you have to account for potentially hundreds of variables such as guns shipped in from other states, etc.

You can look at statistical studies on gun violence at the John Hopkins website or read their book. I must warn you, these are not Rush Limbaugh approved studies so you may get cooties.

  • Viewpoint: Veterans' stories of patriotism, loyalty are uplifting As a professor at Ivy Tech Community College, I continually see very diverse backgrounds of our students. This semester has been especially satisfying in that the class, Fundamentals of Public Speaking, has a myriad of circumstances and lifestyles. I have been fortunate to have three veterans in my class who have served in the Armed Services.

  • Letter: U.S. should take care of its own children first American citizens are the most caring and giving people anywhere in the world. This said, we should worry about our own children's futures first instead of children coming here illegally.

  • Letter: Quality of water in Killbuck is residents' concern On April 9, in The Herald Bulletin, in a front page article by Zach Osowski, I read about the proposed reservoir in our area. State Sen. Doug Eckert mentioned the future need for water in the Indianapolis area.

  • Letter: City beautification ignores other areas I read in the paper where they are going to start work on their great roundabout. What a waste, they are spending millions on the south side for the great gateway to Anderson and all the while the rest of Anderson is ignored.

  • Letter: Poll shows priorities are backward Your recent polling question about schools providing free food for children tells us society has its priorities backwards. The conservatives want low taxes. 53 percent said no to feeding the kids.

  • Letter: Mounds Lake will do more harm than good How pathetic that promoters of the Mounds Lake Reservoir and dam project are so uncaring of the homes and businesses in the area proposed.
