Letter: Mother's Day greeting can be hurtful to some

My husband, Mike, and I decided not to have children. There is an illness in both of our families and we didn't want our children to contract it.

Every Mother's Day, people wish me a "Happy Mother's Day." Sometimes it hurts, and I feel sad because I never became a mother. People should not automatically wish every woman they see a "Happy Mother's Day." Some women get married and can't have children. Some women never married so maybe they don't have children. Maybe they are married and don't want children. People should not assume that every woman is a mother. When they do, it hurts! Some of us chose not to have children for various reasons.
