Letter: Wheel tax just costs driver 6.8 cents a day

I think that everyone holding a valid driver’s license should pay a wheel tax, not just the owner of a car. Anyone with a license uses the roads every day and perhaps the fees would be less with the increased number of people paying. I can’t understand all of the commotion over a wheel tax when residents of this state pay outrageous fees for license plates. And even more bizarre tax is the state tax on pensions.

Funding is necessary to maintain and improve services. Madison County needs to attract business and this will never happen with a crumbling infrastructure. It seems that this deterioration started with the property tax caps and now struggling municipalities and school districts must find a way to provide the same services with decreased funding. A wheel tax is a financially minimal way to ensure that the county has good roads to keep residents safe and to attract potential investors. At the current rate the wheel tax equates to 6.8 cents per day.

I am not affiliated with any political party except the party of common sense. I live on a fixed income also but could certainly find some way to put aside 6.8 cents a day.
