Letter: Pay your bill, have a nice day

I recently overheard a help desk call to a health insurance company which went something like this: “Um, hi, I just had a procedure at the hospital and I don’t see where your company paid anything on the claim, I thought the procedure was covered. Yes, it’s covered. Oh, then you’ll be sending the hospital a payment? No sir. Um, maybe it’s just me but what is the difference between covered and not covered if I have to pay for both. Well, you first have to pay the deductible and then the co-payment, when those are taken care of we will make payments. Oh, OK, but I spent quite a bit on the insurance to take care of these types of things and now I can’t afford to pay the hospital. Sir, if you will look on your statement you’ll see how much money we saved you, the hospital is only charging a fraction of the amount you would owe without insurance. Yes, I see that, but I thought it was illegal to charge different prices to different people for the same service and I appreciate the lower price but it didn’t cost you anything. Running this help desk is not free sir, as for the pricing thing, that doesn’t really apply to us. So what you’re telling me is that I purchase insurance so the hospital won’t triple the price? Yes, that’s why you have insurance. Have a nice day.”
