An Elwood High School senior is being held in the Madison County Jail on $10,000 bond for allegedly burglarizing two businesses early Wednesday.

Jason A. Mundy, 19, made an initial court appearance Thursday on four preliminary counts of burglary, all Class C felonies; two counts of theft, both Class D felonies; and one count of criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor.

Elwood police were called to Steel Slitting, 213 S. 28th St., shortly before 4 a.m. on a report of a break-in. Officers chased two people to the 2700 block of South D Street where the two split up. Police then used a canine to track a scent that led them to Mundy’s South D Street home, according to police. They found several items stolen from the business near Mundy’s home.

A few minutes later, they were called to a home in the 2700 block of Main Street, not far from the burglary, on a report of a juvenile attempting suicide, according to court documents. Police quickly suspected the juvenile, whose age wasn’t included in the court documents, was involved in the burglary.

While police were responding to the suicide attempt, they received a report of a burglary at Venus Chocolate Shop, 2840 South A St. Someone broke a side window and took several items from the business.

Police questioned the juvenile at the hospital, and he admitted to the break-ins and implicated Mundy as his accomplice.

Police got a warrant to search Mundy’s home, and picked him up at John Hinds Career Center, 1109 N. 19th St., and took him to the Elwood Police Station for questioning.

Mundy admitted to the burglaries, and also said he broke into a construction trailer in the 2800 block of South D Street.

Madison County Magistrate Stephen Clase approved a request from the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for three extra days to file formal charges against Mundy.

Class C felonies are punishable by up to eight years behind bars, while a Class D felony carries a maximum of three years in prison. A Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year in jail.
