ALEXANDRIA — An Alexandria woman faces neglect and drug charges after her 4-year-old son was found wandering alone Saturday while she was in Fairmount.
Jessica L. Glass, 29, made an initial court appearance Monday on charges of neglect, and possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and a controlled substance. The most serious charges against Glass are punishable by six months to three years in prison, if convicted. She was being held in the Madison County Jail on $5,000 late Monday.
According to court documents:
Alexandria officers were called to the 500 block of West Berry Street after a man found the boy walking in the area with no shoes at about 9 a.m. The child told officers that when he woke up that morning no one was home and he became scared.
Not long after police arrived, the boy’s aunt and uncle showed up at the scene. They told officers they were called by the boy’s father, Jeremy Glass, Fairmount, to check on the child.
Jeremy Glass told officers Jessica was to drop the child off at his home that morning for normal visitation. When she arrived at about 7 a.m., the child was not with her, and she was “frantically” searching her car for the boy, Jeremy told officers.
Fairmount police brought Jessica to the Alexandria Police Department. She told officers she woke that day with the boy, gave him a bath and had breakfast. They went to her ex-boyfriend’s home and then drove to Fairmount. Jessica told officers she thought the child was with her. She appeared intoxicated during police questioning, according to court documents.
Officers discovered a small amount of marijuana and methamphetamine in her purse. She was taken into custody, and jail officers discovered about four Hydrocodone pills wrapped in cellophane hidden in her undergarment.
It wasn’t immediately known if Jessica Glass has an attorney. The boy was released into his father’s custody.
