5:47 p.m.: Town to review parkland plan

By Jason M. White

Markleville residents are invited to a meeting Monday to review the town’s plan for parkland development.

Park board members are scheduled to meet 7 p.m. Monday at Markleville Town Hall to review the final draft of the parks master plan.

The master plan does not call for any additional acreage.

Instead, the plan will guide the development and upkeep of Markleville’s current parkland, said Bob Fesler, a plan commission member who is also on the town council.

Markleville has about 15 acres of parkland in three spots:

n About 8 acres along Indiana 38 on the west edge of town.

A quarter acre at the corner of Indiana 38 and County Road 300.

n About eight acres off Walnut Street in the southern part of town.

The southern park is undeveloped and has a variety of potential uses because of its tress and ponds, Fesler said. The master plan calls for a system of trails that winds through the park, he said.

Park officials have worked on the master plan for about a year, as part of the town’s overall comprehensive plan for growth and development, Fesler said.

Town officials have worked closely with the Madison County Council of Governments to develop the comprehensive plan, Fesler said.
