LAPEL — Firefighters have brought the fire at a furniture store in Lapel under control, but smoke still continues to billow from the building.
Authorities are reporting no injuries related to the fire, which gutted Hickory Furniture Design, 107 W. 14th St.
Firefighters from Lapel, Pendleton, Hamilton County, Anderson, Frankton, Ingalls and other units fought the fire that broke out this morning. Water is being brought from a nearby stone quarry to deal with hot spots.
Brad McQueen, the owner of the business, said a spark from a tool ignited the fire. Employees tried to put the blaze out with an extinguisher, but it grew out of control. Ten to 12 employees were in the building, which had no sprinkler system, at the time the fire started.
Lapel Fire Chief Jeff Passwater said his department was called to the scene at about 9:15 a.m.
Hickory Furniture specializes in furniture items made from hickory sticks and logs. The business is located in the former Lapel bowling alley.
Firefighers erected a curtain to protect a nearby home. No other nearby buildings had visible damage from the fire. It fook about an hour to extinguish the fire.
