ANDERSON — Madison County sheriff’s investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman who apparently racked up about $1,400 in fraudulent credit card purchases during a seven-hour period in April.

“It’s not big or high-profile, but I figure the best way to get somebody is to show them to the public,” Detective Doug Beltz said Wednesday. “I’ve got a face but no name to go with it.”

Beltz said a rural Anderson man, who wasn’t identified, lost his wallet in the parking lot of Lowe’s, 3335 Scatterfield Road, on Saturday, Apr. 21. A credit card was later used twice at Wal-Mart, 2321 Charles St., and at least a dozen gas stations.

Between 11 p.m. Apr. 21 and about 6 a.m. the next day, about $1,400 in purchases were charged on the card, Beltz said. The woman’s image was captured on a video camera when she made a purchase at a Speedway gas station near the corner of 38th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the detective said.

Beltz said the woman used the card to buy gas, cigarettes and clothing during the spree, “nothing really high-priced,” he added.

Surveillance images also recorded two vehicles the woman is suspected of taking when she twice visited Wal-Mart. One was a newer-model, two-door, red Pontiac Grand Prix. The second vehicle appeared to be a 2000 maroon Ford F-150 pickup.

Beltz said the rural Anderson man’s bank noticed the unusual purchases later on Apr. 22 and put a freeze on the credit card, ending the apparently illegal shopping spree.

Now, Beltz said, he’s hoping someone in the community can identify the mystery shopper.

“Hopefully, somebody can recognize her and call me anonymously,” he said.
