LAPEL — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire near a business that threatened to ignite a pair of large fuel holding tanks.
Gary Stephenson, a daytime emergency medical technician and firefighter with the Lapel Volunteer Fire Department, said firefighters were called to Owens-Brockway Glass Container, 2481 S. 950W, at about 9 a.m. Thursday. They found a large air compressor about 15 yards away from the business, but connected to the building, fully engulfed in flames, he said.
Stephenson said firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, but they were concerned because a pair of approximately 1,300-gallon diesel fuel tanks were on two sides of the compressor, which is about the size of a full-size pickup truck.
There were no explosions, however, and the fire did not spread to the main business, Stephenson said. No firefighters were injured.
Stephenson said firefighters cleared the scene around 10:40 a.m. He could not provide a monetary estimate for the damage.
