ANDERSON — A local man survived a gunshot to the head following a bar fight on the city’s west side early Sunday.
And a stray bullet struck an innocent bystander during the scuffle, at about 3 a.m. at Club 765, at the corner of Nichol and Arrow avenues.
Stevaughn Fuller, 20, was listed in serious condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis Sunday evening. A bullet punctured the side of his head but missed his brain, Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur said.
Andrea Mitchell, 24, was listed in serious but stable condition at Methodist Hospital on Sunday evening. A stray bullet struck her in the abdomen.
Police on Sunday were pursuing several leads to find the shooter, who fled through the bar’s front door after firing off two or three rounds with an automatic handgun, Sandefur said. They did not have any suspects but had identified a person of interest, meaning someone who could become a suspect.
Fuller was on the crowded dance floor when the incident happened. He had an argument with a man that escalated into a physical fight. Then the man pulled a handgun from his waistband and opened fire at Fuller, Sandefur said.
The first shot punctured the side of Fuller’s head, the second shot went astray and struck Mitchell in the abdomen and witnesses reported a possible third shot that was fired, although no one else was injured, according to police.
The assailant’s friends pulled him back, and bar patrons ducked for cover, Sandefur said. The shooter ran through the bar’s front door following the incident, according to police.
Fuller’s sister called 911. She had been at the bar along with their mother.
Fuller was conscious and responsive when Anderson police arrived at the scene. He suffered a hematoma, internal bleeding and swelling, Sandefur said.
Police were still investigating the cause of the fight, but they believe it was over something trivial, Sandefur said.
Investigators could not say for sure whether Fuller and the shooter knew each other.
