ANDERSON — Civic leaders from across Madison County met at the Flagship Enterprise Center Tuesday evening to learn how recent changes to Indiana’s tax code will impact funding.
The overarching message of the event, which was organized by the Madison County Board of Commissioners and the Anderson mayor’s office, was that all government bodies — from school districts to fire departments — will have to work together to keep property tax revenues in check.
For example, the actions of one government unit could put taxpayers above their property tax maximum, often called the “circuit breaker cap,” and therefore decrease tax revenue going to other units of government, the panelists explained.
The five members of the speaking panel were David Bottorff, Association of Indiana Counties; Rhonda Cook, Indiana Association of Cities and Towns; Dennis Costerison, Indiana Association of School Business Officials; and independent consultant Jim Steele.
