ANDERSON — Resurrection Temple, the church formerly led by Bishop Robert Scott, was sold at a sheriff’s sale Friday morning.

Minnesota-based American Church Mortgage Co. purchased the property, located at 335 W. 14th St., for $325,000. It was the only bid submitted for the church, said Abbie Ramsey of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department’s civil office.

The sale price was $117,100 below the amount needed to settle debt left after the church’s mortgage was foreclosed upon in August. A call to American Church Mortgage on Friday was not returned.

Scott had been with the church for several years before it closed sometime last year. Along with the mortgage foreclosure, Scott has been named in five civil collection lawsuits seeking more than $250,000.

Some of those cases were brought by former members of Resurrection Temple who claim Scott conned them into giving him money for church projects that never materialized.

Scott is also the subject of an investigation by the Anderson Police Department. Detective Mitch Carroll said he was pursuing a possible felony charge against Scott for forging a man’s signature on a car loan.

Other than an e-mail sent to Anderson Community Schools on April 21, no one locally has reported contact with Scott for more than two months. In the e-mail, Scott said he was forced resign from the school board because he no longer lived in Anderson. He gave no indication of his new address.

The Anderson school board is expected to vote on Scott’s replacement during a meeting on Tuesday.
