Man treated and released at Indy hospital

By Shawn McGrath, Herald Bulletin Staff Writer

NOBLESVILLE — An Elwood man was treated at an Indianapolis hospital following a one-vehicle crash in Hamilton County on Friday.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Mike Burns said Leonard Sharp, 58, was driving a Ford Ranger northbound along Interstate 69 at about 3:15 p.m. near the nine mile marker and the Verizon Wireless Music Center when he noticed stopped traffic ahead.

Sharp braked and swerved into the median to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles. The pickup rolled once in the median, coming to a rest on its wheels. The roll-over collapsed the pickup’s roof, and emergency responders from Fishers Fire and Rescue had to extricate Sharp from the truck.

Sharp was taken to Methodist Hospital by ambulance. He was alert and speaking with emergency personnel at the crash scene, according to Burns, who is Pendleton Post spokesman. Methodist officials said he had been treated and released by Friday evening. Sharp had been wearing a seatbelt, and was not ejected from the pickup

“Mr. Sharp was definitely saved by wearing his seatbelt or he probably would have been ejected from the vehicle and a more tragic consequence may have occurred,” Trooper Jeremiah Criswell is quoted as saying in a news release.

The interstate’s northbound and southbound lanes were shut down for about 30 minutes because of the crash.

Along with ISP and Fishers first responders, Hamilton County sheriff’s deputies also assisted at the scene.
