“All of the agencies I have been in contact with recently can’t keep the food on their shelves,” said the United Way’s Vaughan. “Their demand is so great. Everybody’s doing what they can.”

No free lunch

On Aug. 1, Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana will impose a delivery fee of $25 on food shipments of less than 900 pounds and $50 on shipments of 900 pounds or more. Second Harvest relocated from Anderson to Muncie in late 2007 and still serves 25 Madison County agencies that operate food pantries and kitchens:

• Alexandria Emergency Relief, Alexandria

• Alexandria Community Center, Alexandria

• First Pentecostal Church, Anderson

• First United Methodist Church, Anderson

• St. John’s Lutheran Church, Anderson

• Salvation Army, Anderson

• Alternatives Inc., Anderson

• House of Hope, Anderson

• Gateway Association, Anderson

• East Lynn Christian Church, Anderson

• Operation Love Inc., Anderson
