The Coach Carey Foundation will hold the second annual Pound the Pavement 5K Run/Walk this Saturday in Falls Park, Pendleton.

This year, the foundation is offering, along with the 5K run/walk, a one mile fun run, stroller strut and dog walk to allow more people to participate in the day’s activities.

“The fun walk is new this year,” said Jan Carey, president of the foundation.

The event is held to raise funds for the Coach Carey Foundation scholarship which is awarded to a senior athlete who participates in track or cross country.

“Last year we had more than 400 people out and raised approximately $2,000 which we were able to give out to an athlete,” said Carey. “We hope to have more people out and raise even more money this year.”

The Coach Carey Foundation is in memory of Kevin Carey, running coach for Pendleton Heights Middle School who passed away of heart disease three years ago.

“He always wanted to do this while he was still living,” said Carey. “He always wanted to sponsor a 5K. We thought this would keep his spirit alive. He would love this.”

The 5K will begin — rain or shine — promptly at 8 a.m. in Falls Park in Pendleton. Those interested may register that day. The cost is $20 and includes a T-shirt.

Along with the 5K and fun walks, there will also be a health fair going on.

“We have booths including a sports massage therapist, information about organ donations because we donated a lot of my husband’s tissues and information about health and family fitness,” said Carey. “We will also have a blood drive. The Indiana Regional Blood Center will be there for blood donations.”

Several Colts cheerleaders will also be on hand for the fun and festivities, said Carey. “And the WFMS Friends and Neighbors wagon will be there for coverage.”

According to Carey, the event is sponsored by Pay Less Pharmacy and Saint John’s Heart Center.

“It will be a fun family event,” said Carey. “It’s a good time and for a good cause.”

Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female 5K finishers and the top three male and female 5K finishers in each age division. Door prizes will also be given out during the run/walk.
