ANDERSON — An Anderson man is expected to be charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting on Anderson’s south side late Sunday, said Anderson Police Department Detective Mitch Carroll.

Christopher B. Archer, 23, Anderson, was arrested around 11 p.m. Sunday after police say he shot a man during an argument outside Tilt-N-Cue, 700 W. 53rd St. Charges are expected to be filed by Thursday.

Carroll said Officer Caleb McKnight was on patrol along 53rd Street around 10:48 p.m. when several gunshots erupted near the pool hall. McKnight observed Archer running west through the parking lot, carrying what appeared to be a rifle, and gave chase. Archer entered a building at nearby Steeplechase apartments, the same building where he lives.

Additional officers soon arrived on scene, including a K-9 unit that tracked Archer to a storage area.

“We found the gun and his shoes outside the building,” Carroll said. “There were wet footprints leading into a storage unit, but none coming out.”

Police ordered anyone inside the storage area to come out. When there was no response, the dog was sent in, biting the man on his upper right arm and bringing him out.

Archer was treated at Saint John’s Medical Center and released. Madison County Judge Stephen Clase signed a 72-hour extension for charges to be filed and set bond at $100,000.

Carroll said the victim, David E. Arnold Jr., 21, Anderson, sustained a single gunshot to the upper torso. He was transported to Saint John’s Medical Center, then transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he underwent surgery and had a section of his bowel removed.

Ashley Price was present at the time of the shooting and told police that Arnold and Archery had an argument earlier in the day and had agreed to meet in the parking lot.

“She stated that David Arnold was unarmed and got out of his vehicle and that Archer stepped from behind the shadows and started firing a rifle multiple times at Arnold,” APD Officer Randy Tracy wrote in a probable cause affidavit. “After Arnold was wounded, Archer fled with his rifle.”

Archer admitted to possessing the rifle and to firing on Arnold, police said.
