The Associated Press

AVON, Ind. — Seven schools in suburban Indianapolis were evacuated as a precaution as crews cleaned up a spill of jet fuel after a tanker truck tipped over on its side.

The accident happened Thursday morning on Indiana 267 near U.S. 36 in Avon east of Indianapolis.

Avon Assistant Police Chief William Weems says that the truck carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel overturned as it was trying to make a U-turn at a railroad crossing.

About 50 gallons of fuel spilled. Crews were drilling a hole inside the side of the overturned tanker to unload the unspilled fuel onto another tanker.

School officials said more than 4,700 students were taken to other schools or area churches.

The truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
