2:40 p.m.: Wind, lower temperatures expected for election day

Justin Schneider

Breezy. Colder. Mostly cloudy.

That is how the National Weather Service (NWS) describes the 2007 Election-Day forecast for Madison, Delaware and Randolph counties.

By “breezy,” the NWS means winds out of the west at 15 to 25 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph. By “colder,” it means highs in the lower 40s, dipping into the upper 20s after nightfall. And, if that prediction holds true, today could be the coldest day of the season so far.

So what effect will the chilly temperatures have on the voter turnout?

“Bad weather does deflate voter turnout,” said Michael Frank, professor of political science at Anderson University. “The worse the weather, the lower the turnout.”
