Man found dead in ditch near Markleville

MARKLEVILLE — Police are investigating the cause of an apparent drowning Friday night.

Billy J. Badgley, 77, was found face down in a ditch filled with water shortly before 7:30 p.m. on his farm in the 8800 block of County Road 1100, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police.

First responders from Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Wilkinson Volunteer Fire Department and the State Police arrived to provide first aid but were unable to revive the man.

According to the release, early indications are the victim fell into a shallow ditch he had been digging in a barn and became wedged. There was a small amount of water in the ditch. It’s unknown whether Badgley drowned or suffered a medical event falling into the shallow trench. He was found by a family member who dialed 911.

Police are currently ruling out foul play, and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
