100 brave cold for Big Mac Attack in Anderson

Free hamburgers for year given away at new Broadway McDonald's

ANDERSON — After more than two months under construction, the McDonald's on Broadway was back in business Tuesday morning, and some people were up all night Monday celebrating.

The McDonald's announced it would be giving away a coupon for a free Big Mac a week for 2014 to the first 100 customers through the door. The doors opened at 6 a.m., and a line was already wrapped around the building.

David Lewis, of Anderson, said his 17-year old son, Michael, arrived at the restaurant at 9:15 p.m. Monday and slept outside the front door with friend David Beeman.

"They took a bunch of blankets out and slept there," Lewis said. "I wasn't interested in the free Big Mac, so I stayed in the car where it was warm."

Lewis said about 150 people were lined up when the doors finally opened. His son was first in line.

The restaurant was still packed at 10 a.m. for the grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting, which was held inside because of cold temperatures.

"We're very pleased with the turnout," store owner and operator Bob Terhune said. "Whenever you close a restaurant, you always wonder if the people will come back. I'm pleased to see they did."

Manager David Moris was amazed by the crowd that had gathered for the opening of the new restaurant.

"When we were at the other local McDonald's waiting for the construction (on the Broadstreet restaurant) to finish, I would see a lot of our regulars stop in and ask how it was going," Moris said. "This is home to a lot of people."

Phil and Mary-Ann Etchison live just north of Anderson and said they stop by the restaurant regularly. Mary-Ann has been coming to the Broadway McDonald's since the 1970s.
